  • “She came back very excited telling me about all the things she enjoyed.”
  • “Thank you for your care of him when ill – the communication was fantastic. The kids both came home very excited with new friends to keep in touch with.”
  • “I think he enjoyed the camp a lot. I have heard him talk about it to others about how much fun he had. This is the longest he has been away from home on his own with people he really didn’t know. I was surprised how well he went. My only question would be mate if a group text / email be sent to say they made it safe and are having a ball.”
  • “She had a wonderful experience and talks about everything. She loved meeting new people and misses them already.”
  • “I would have liked a little bit more info leading up to the camp, however the actual camp experience was very well organised and the activities were very well supervised.”
  • “My daughter had a great time and is excited about being able to return to the camp. I think it has been a great experience for her and the start of her independent journey in life”.
  • “Both boys seem to have had an awesome time and came home with lots of great stories.”
  • “This was her second year. Last year she was 10 and too young and struggled with no contact for a long period and girls bitchy and not friendly. This year – perfect age – 11. Had loads of fun.”
  • “She enjoyed camp very much. She made some friends. She is interested to take some leadership role and this camp has further encouraged her thinking that way. I believe this was influenced by supportive camp leaders. There was some disappointing comment about negative letters from one person in her dormitory which sounded to us like teenage jealousy and moodiness but is disruptive in the group setting.”
  • “Like last year, he had a  great time.”
  • “She enjoyed it heaps and won’t stop talking about it.”
  • “I am always thankful to the camp and wonderful staff for the extra care they give my daughter. They show her how to have camp spirit and skills to be included in friendship building and not to be on the side lines. She grows as a person every time she returns to us.”
  • “Excellent.”
  • “A life saver. Being a single mum on a pension who had an operation on my arm. My daughter spent the first two weeks of the holiday as my personal carer – helping me shower, dress, cook, clean – everything – she deserved a fun, safe holiday and Portsea Camp took care of her professionally, answered all my questions re fire safety etc. God bless you all.”
  • “Very happy with it and the stories that come back, yes he was looking forward to going and going again next year. I’d like to see that he tries all activities if time works out, thanks.”
  • “She seems to have had a terrific time, from all reports she really enjoyed the activities, the other people (both children and counsellors), the food and was well cared for. Thank you for looking after hers so well.”
  • “On the return from Portsea Camp she had an excited glow in her. I knew she enjoyed herself. It was an experience that was new to her and I’m very thankful that she had the opportunity to do.”
  • “She had a wonderful time and she is hoping she gets to go again, it gets her away from home as she has nowhere to go in the holiday. Thank you for looking after her and giving her the best holiday.”
  • “He came home happy, wanting to go back, yelling how great the CC’s were. He is a very outdoors boy and loved all the activities.”
  • “I think she enjoyed Portsea Camp a great deal, she seemed very happy about her experiences and made lots of new friends.”
  • “I have had two children go and they have both come back with great stories and experiences. I think that its a great opportunity for country kids to have a camp like that.”
  • “I think he had a good time but he was a little homesick and also unwell when he arrived (our fault!) – so I guess if he was in peak health he would have enjoyed it more. The camp staff handled him very well and it was great he could ring us whenever he needed to.”
  • “He enjoyed the whole camp experience. He spoke highly of the CCs and Reccies.”
  • “I have had two children attend the camp and they have both thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked how we could email our kids. A text needs to be sent out to parents if the bus is going to be late as I live far out of town.”
  • “She had an awesome time doing activities, she made new friends along the way, she wishes that she can go again.”
  • “She came back so happy and told us all about the fun she had. She made some new friends and will keep in contact with them. She also wants to volunteer when she is older! Five star. I am very impressed!”
  • “My child was happy and not scared or lonely and the independence is invaluable.”
  • “She has had an enjoyable time at camp. She has talked non-stop about all the activities and friends she has made. The leaders were very helpful and nice. She would have liked to go and be a junior leader. Not happy about getting a phone call on first day to say they haven’t got any forms or information on her. The communication was not good.”
  • “She has been twice and loved each time.”
  • “She returned from camp with great stories to tell and an overall improvement in her self-confidence. She really enjoyed her experience except for the mouthful of salt water she got when swimming, her telling of the story was very funny.”
  • “It was very good and she would love to come back when she is 16.”
  • “She had nothing negative to say. She raved about her experience. we are impressed with the variety of activities and the enthusiasm of all the leaders and juniors involved. Thank you very much.”
  • “She had a fabulous time and would recommend to anyone.”
  • “Portsea Camp has been a wonderful experience in her life. In all ways it has been an affirming time and has exposed her to wonderful children and CCs and reccies. We are very much a camping family but we would never expose her to all that Portsea offered. Thank you very much.”
  • “She came home very happy. A great opportunity to make new friends.”
  • “She returned home exhausted but with a big smile. It’s now the 24th January and she still talks about ‘Portsea’ not only to us but to anyone who pauses long enough to listen! Her general attitude has changed in a positive way also – no more tears or aggressive behaviour when asked for a job around the house. There is indications that she will do some of these jobs before being asked!”
  • “She had a great time on camp. She enjoyed all activities and food. Well run and great opportunity for country kids.”
  • “Well done, the children really enjoyed it.”
  • “She seemed to have really enjoyed herself. She was very excited about telling us all the different things she has done and tried. She was very proud of herself for trying the flying fox as this has been one of her big fears. The only complaint she seemed to have was that the showers weren’t long enough. 3mins isn’t long enough to wash long hair.”
  • “She had a another wonderful experience at Portsea this year. She was very positive about the activities. Wonderful opportunity for country kids.”
  • “He came home with lots to tell – he really enjoyed it, but said he thought about home often. His main friend had to leave early but he made other friends. He said sometimes he just wanted to be on his own but I think he made a good effort to join in.”
  • “He seemed to have had a wonderful time on camp. He talked much about the activities that he was involved in and about the new friends that he met.”
  • “He had the most amazing time he wished the camp was for 2 weeks and not just one. He raved about how good all the Recceis and Ccs were. He loved that he had the opportunity to sleep out in the tipi. Overall he had an absolute ball with all activities offered!”
  • “He is upset because he will be 13 years old this year. Thank you so much. Thank you to all staff and volunteers, nurses, leaders.”
  • “FANTASMAGORICAL! One extremely happy camper arrived home full of stories and enthusiasm to go again! Thank you all so much for everything during the week. Very much appreciated.”
  • “She said she had a great time. She made lots of new friends. It was just a shame that she got gastro while away – which I understand was no-one’s fault.”
  • “She had a wonderful experience. She was very happy when she came home and eager to tell us all about what she had done and the new people she had met. Thank you for having her.”
  • “Enjoyed camp overall, had made friends, came back happy to have gone. As a parent found organiser quite disorganised, incorrect phone numbers on paperwork and untrustworthy with medications (lost although named).”
  • “They seemed to enjoy it. Very pleased. Thank you for your professionalism.”
  • “He had a wonderful time, made great friends, had new experiences and will hold a lot of wonderful memories, thank you!!”
  • “He had a great time. Got a little homesick but didn’t tell anyone – just got on with it.”
  • “He came home happy and tired, he had nothing but positive comments to make. I believe he had a great experience and the way you run / organise the camp is great.”
  • “Very positive except for the meals this may have been her being fussy. Congratulations to all for the manner in which the camp is run and for the activities provided.”
  • “A fantastic experience, very well run and administered. Lots of enjoyable activities, memorable events, good food and fun.”
  • “Such a great experience. Such a great confidence builder. Great to help make new friends. Great new experiences. Fantastic. She had the best time and made the most of it. She loved it. She would go back again.”
  • “She thoroughly enjoyed the camp. It was a great experience for her. When packing I read to take sheets or sleeping bags. We packed sheets thinking there would be blankets, there wasn’t and Kate was cold overnight, she asked for a blanket and was told she couldn’t have one.” (One for us to follow up as we do have blankets).
  • “A wonderful experience, especially that he is an only child. He just got to see and learn about team work. Wants to go back, glad his aunt could come for a visit.”
  • “My daughter and her best friend love camp. This year however, it seemed that the girls in their room were a bit mean to each other. She felt she didn’t have anyone around who she could talk to nor did it seem like cabin supervision was as good or interactive as the previous year. Parents really want to know what the disco theme is. I only thought to ask because they had been previously.”
  • “My daughter had a fantastic time – thank you. I’m not sure whether we missed the information but we didn’t realise that washing was available. A great service!”
  • “She enjoyed the whole experience. we had a child attend in 2014 who enjoyed camp also. She would also like to return to camp and also be a leader.”

Parent’s feedback from Camp 2, January 2015 – 36 responses to date, 229 children

  • “He came home with a hoarse voice and exhausted from not much sleep. He also stank as he didn’t shower for the whole week! Please ensure more sleep next time and maybe a roster for showers or something as he said they were full every time he tried.”
  • “He had a fantastic time at camp. I like that he was able to meet a variety of new people and experience activities that are invaluable to him in the Mallee.”
  • “He had the best time, told us all the ghost stories and the activities he did, he is a happy boy.”
  • “She has thoroughly enjoyed camp for the last two years. It has been great for her independence – she looks forward to coming back as a leader in 2019.”
  • “I think she was cared for and helped while at camp after the first day which then gave her sister a break.”
  • “She went last year and said this year was better. It’s great that they can do so many activities that they otherwise wouldn’t get a chance to and the food sounded fantastic.”
  • “She had a wonderful experience at the camp. She made some friends and really liked the camp leaders. She spoke about the camp telling us about the great activities. Thank you.”
  • “She had an absolutely wonderful time. It means a lot because I am experiencing health issues which means she is stuck at home during the holidays and I know she gets bored, so this has been a wonderful experience. She loves the staff and told me all about the new friends she made. I hope she can go again one day.”
  • “Amazing, she had a wonderful time even though she was homesick on the first night. Loved meeting new friends and especially loved all the activities and the people who helped them. THANK YOU. Loved the Facebook website, Knew what they were up to each day.”
  • “She enjoyed the camp. It was her first time away from us for that length of time and have a fantastic experience, from all reports. She is looking forward to attending the next camp.”
  • “Although anxious leading up to camp he returned home very excited with lots of stories. He has already asked to return next year.”
  • “He seemed to have a pretty good time. Loved all the leaders.”
  • “She thoroughly enjoyed herself and would recommend it to any child.”
  • “She came home so tired she was in a foul mood. Please ensure more sleep next time by earlier nights / later mornings otherwise lots of fun was had and she can’t stop talking about it.”
  • “She loved it. Sadly she misplaced her camera during the concert. Even more sadder is the fact that it had photos taken of a family member now deceased.”
  • “He had a great time at camp. He had lots of great experiences. I think he was quite confronted by the behaviour / language of some of the children. He said that he understood they were from disadvantaged backgrounds but I think it took away from the overall fun of the camp. I believe things improved once one child was sent home. It’s okay for kids to experience different ways but they shouldn’t feel unsafe.” (The child said they didn’t feel unsafe at camp).
  • “He has always had fun and great to get to go on holidays to the beach. But he gets very frustrated with the unruly kids that get in trouble and want to cause fights. But always a smile on his face when coming home after making new friends.”
  • “She thoroughly enjoyed herself and would recommend to any child.”
  • “I would say that she had a wonderful time, she hasn’t stopped talking about all her experiences and activities she did for the week. She put on the DVD of the photos and told us all about the people she had met. She has said she would love to do it again. Thank you for giving her some great experiences, especially being at the ocean.”
  • “She loved it.”
  • “She came home very tired but had an absolutely amazing time and hasn’t stopped talking about her experiences.”
  • “She enjoyed the camp immensely. I was concerned that she was threatened to be bashed by unknown person. She also described to me a boy who tried to commit suicide which was concerning.” (Both matters investigated with no necessity for any follow-up).
  • “He had an absolute ball. Was a little reluctant when leaving but has come home animated and excited. Loved it. Well done to all of you.”
  • “Both children enjoyed camp. Just a shame about the bad behavioured ones have explained to them no everyone has a good home.”
  • “I was initially so excited to find out there was a disc of photos. That excitement quickly turned to disappointment with our child being photographed once in the background and once on the swing. Perhaps each dorm needs a person responsible for taking photos of their kids. Just a thought.”(280 children at camp, a disc burner that runs all night on the camp’s last night with staff staying up to feed in discs, thousands of out of focus images, etc etc, we do our very best but no doubt that the ‘take a photo of me’ kids feature more prominently. Most photos are of groups of kids, photographs that have only one child in them are on discs because they are – exceptional photographs).
  • “Absolutely fantastic. She thoroughly enjoyed the camp despite being homesick. CC looked after her very well  and provided plenty of TLC. I was expecting a pile of washing on her return however I was very surprised and appreciative that her washing was done for her. Thank you! Overall I couldn’t be happier with the experience that she had! Thank you once again.”
  • “Absolutely fantastic.”
  • “A positive experience. Had not been exposed to children who have behavioural problems. He was able to se how people react and manage situations. Was very well run, great food and helpers.”
  • “Excellent, she came back very happy from the camp experience, she could not fault anything! Well done to all involved! and many thanks!”

  • “She has been three times and loves going. Always has great things to say.”
  • “Fantastic, very happy, she will be back next year.”
  • “They were very happy campers.”
  • “She came back with a marked improvement in her confidence and we were very happy about that. She said she did try new things and enjoyed the beach. Well done to all!! She had two concerns – I didn’t pack enough t-shirts!!, no hooks near showers to keep clothes and towel off floor.”
  • “He is reluctant to go to camp, he has been twice but does have good things to say when he gets back – I hope we can talk him into going again next year as I think this is a great opportunity.”

Children’s ‘additional comments’ from Camp 2, January 2015

  • “Just don’t change a thing and maybe make the high ropes higher.”
  • “Lots of kids are really annoying when trying to go to sleep, like stories, am really tired.”
  • “Didn’t get a chance to go bike riding because there were never enough bikes.” (We have 34 bikes, 18 bought new only 2 weeks prior to camp. Bike riding was restricted due to the terrible storms with thunder and lightning all week).
  • “The disco, carnival and concert were awesome. The best part about the camp was meeting new people and having fun.”

  • “I LOVED camp sooooo much, I’m already missing it! I LOVED everything about it except some people’s behaviour and the continuous chatter at night from the girls, other than that it was amazing.”
  • “Keep an eye on the kids that are rude and trouble makers. They spoil it for the good ones, they should be sent home instead of being given too many chances.”
  • “I don’t like the disco being outside.”
  • “It was fun and everyone should get the opportunity to go.”
  • “I would love to come back and make even more friends.”
  • “It was really lots of fun and I really liked … I met anew best friend. I loved all the night games and sleeping in the tipi.”
  • “I think you need more showers and clocks in the dorms.”
  • “The food could be a bit better at times.”
  • “I enjoyed all of the activities and Ilike the new friends and new experiences.”
  • “I didn’t like sleeping with so many in one room. I would have enjoyed the canoeing more if the weather was more favourable.”
  • “It was awesome!!!”
  • “The only bad thing was the kid swearing, the leader never pulling them up enough.”
  • “It was all great.”

Parent’s feedback from Camp 3, January 2015 – 34 responses to date, 273 children

  • “She loved it and wants to do it again. The only complaint I have is there might be a better way to communicate with your child as it is a long time to be away.”
  • “From the stories I have heard it sounds like my daughter had a wonderful time. She has talked the whole way home which was a 3 hour drive from Melbourne!!”
  • “He has said he had a really good time. He said he would have preferred Monday – Friday and I would also have preferred that. I missed him.”
  • “Thank you. My daughter had a great time and hasn’t stopped talking about it since she came home. The things she made were wonderful. She was very impressed with the camp leaders. I think it helped that her friends also went so she had a mate there. Thank you very much for looking after her and providing great activities and people.”
  • “After hearing all her camp stories I believe she has had a wonderful, positive experience which she will always remember throughout her life. She is already keen to come again next January 2016 and her little sister wants to come too but she’ll still be too young to attend. I am so glad I sent her because she now knows that she can cope away from mum and dad for a week. Her longest time away by herself. A big thank you for giving her a wonderful time and memories.”
  • “My daughter had a ball. She hasn’t stopped talking about it since she got home. She loves the t-shirt with everyone’s name on it. One suggestion would be to allow the kids to exchange contact details so they can keep in touch. I have a few scraps of paper with phone numbers but no names.” (We never give adult’s contact details to kids but they are supported to exchange contact details with other kids).
  • “Wow!! she was so happy, excited and couldn’t stop talking about the wonderful experience and wonderful time of meeting new friends and having the time of her life with all the activities and enjoying everything else that she came across. I missed her like crazy but would let her do it again in a heart beat. Thank you all so much.”
  • “She could not stop talking about it for ages. Sang all the camp songs to us which were awesome. She had a fantastic experience.”
  • “She had a great time at camp and she made lots of new friends. She loved all the activities and her favourite junior was Brook.”
  • “She returned confident and extremely happy. She felt safe, slept well, exercised and she told me that she was always busy with lots of activities. The food was great and lots of it and all the staff seemed to be focused on the kids so thank you for making this possible for her and her sister who normally misses these camps.”
  • “It’s what she needed to meet other kids and to make friends, has not stopped talking about it so thank you for the opportunity for her to go.”
  • “We were very grateful for all you did for our child. We may be moving so here are our contact details so she doesn’t miss out on the next cam. THANK YOU.”
  • “He hasn’t stopped talking about camp. He came home happy. There has been no negative stories. The photo CD was a fantastic idea. While filling out this survey he has a huge smile on his face. well done.”
  • “She had a wonderful time this year. She is very keen to come to the Portsea Camp in September. She made some new friends, went on the giant swing (wasn’t brave enough last year!) and sang in the final evening concert. Most of the food was excellent, comfy bed and loved the crafty activities and the STAFF!”
  • “Would like to be able to contact my child, believe if they take their own phone they can simply send a msg to say what they’ve done for the day or how they’re feeling. Could possibly make the rule that contact is only at night when they’re in the dorm / bed. No phones during the day. Helps put nervous parent’s minds at ease.”
  • “She said she had a great time and enjoyed all the activities and the food. Unfortunately she will be too old to return next year even though she would love to.”
  • “He thoroughly enjoyed his week at camp, the activities, the stories, the songs and the friends. Thank you for the fabulous photo CD. Thank you so much to the Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala for sponsoring the very lucky kids to attend.”
  • “My son had previously attended in 2012. My other two children came this year and both thoroughly enjoyed the camp; with many thanks to Jan and Jim (RSL) and all the many organisations that provide and support Portsea Camp. You guys are awesome.”
  • “This was such a big thing for my daughter to do. Thank you for looking after her. She had a great time.”

  • “It was great to have him come home with plenty of stories and talked about his adventures and things he made.”
  • She expressed that she had a fantastic time at camp. As her parents we are very pleased with the experience she has been given, the organisation, staff, carers and activities have all given her not only learning and guidance but self-confidence and we both thank you all greatly. She was lucky enough to be sponsored by the RSL.”
  • “She had a lot of fun and the camp is very organised.”
  • “She thought the camp was AWESOME! She really enjoyed herself. Thank you.”
  • “She enjoyed her time at camp and is looking forward to going again. She found the dorm too noisy at night. Would have liked to choose another cereal (dislikes rice bubbles).”
  • “Sounds like the kids were kept very busy with lots of choices for activities they anted to try. Also very well looked after. My son came home thrilled that he went and tried it out – he was very nervous going as he didn’t know anyone else attending but was very warmly welcomed and made some friends. Overall – very impressed at a very well run and organised camp! Thanks so much, and thanks to our local RSL.”
  • He really enjoyed the whole experience of the camp. I was a bit worried when I dropped him off to catch the bus as he knew nobody on the camp. He is inclined to be a loner, but he made many friends. He was even talking to them on FB when he got home. Thank you for giving him this opportunity to go to camp, and making it a wonderful time.”
  • “Sounds like he had a great time, especially meeting lots of other children from different parts of Victoria and interstate, and all the different activities.”
  • “He came home in good spirits and he was really excited to tell us about his time there.”

Yooralla feedback, October 2014

“Families had a fantastic time and were really appreciative of the wonderful Portsea Camp staff. We were all impressed with the way your team were so calm, positive, patient and encouraging of children and adults. There was also huge appreciation for Jack and the wonderful food and general appreciation of the opportunity to stay in such a fantastic location. We have families who have rarely seen the sea.

Thank you so much for your support and for making it possible to bring families to the camp. We look forward to working with you again next year!”
