For 80 years, The Portsea Camp has been a cherished cornerstone of adventure, growth, and connection. As custodians of this heritage-listed site, our primary commitment is ensuring every child who walks through our gates has a secure, welcoming, and comfortable environment to learn, play, and grow.
Maintaining historic buildings and coastal grounds takes continuous care, and winter is always our busiest behind-the-scenes season. Balancing tight camp bookings, unpredictable coastal weather, and trade availability is no small feat. We want to send a massive shout-out to our incredible facilities team, who worked tirelessly through the colder months to coordinate these upgrades without missing a beat.
We are thrilled to share how a transformative act of generosity came to life across our grounds.
An Extraordinary Act of Generosity
We are profoundly grateful to have received an incredible $100,000 tagged donation to our capital improvement plan from the Beck Family Foundation. To say we are thankful and appreciative feels like an understatement. Support of this magnitude is deeply significant for our organisation. It allows us to accelerate critical site improvements that directly protect the children coming through our gates, ensuring our facilities remain safe, warm, and inspiring for generations of campers to come.
Importantly, contributions like this bolster our long-term sustainability as an organisation. By funding vital capital works that would otherwise stretch our operating budget, this gift ensures our ongoing resources remain focused on delivering life-changing camp experiences for children from all walks of life. It also enables us to make better use of our ageing infrastructure, helping us attract and retain more customers year-round. Building this capacity to generate our own income is fundamental to sustaining the entire charity and its ongoing work.
When combined with additional support, the total investment across these winter projects reached $108,294.55.
True to the Beck Family tagline, “Supporting the Community,” this project was a true community effort. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our wonderful local trades and suppliers – including CoreTemp, Hevac Control Agency, Michael Aiello Painting, M. Sal Constructions, RJ Wood Plumbing, and Distinctive Floor Coverings P/L, for partnering with us to bring these improvements to life.
Bringing the Vision to Life: What We Accomplished This Winter
Running an historic coastal camp means our buildings require constant love and attention. During the winter shutdown, our team tackled a comprehensive list of vital improvements to enhance guest comfort, safety, and site resilience:
- Upgrading Climate Comfort: To ensure our accommodation stays cosy and welcoming no matter the weather, we replaced outdated gas heaters with new, highly efficient split system air conditioners across the Nautilus, Connelly, Murray, Stuart, and Franklin buildings. We also added tamper-proof covers supplied and supported by Hevac Control Agency to protect the units for years to come.
- Refreshing Nautilus Centre: The heavily used Nautilus building received a complete interior makeover. We completed a full internal repaint to brighten and protect the space, paired with a brand-new flooring replacement that dramatically improves durability, safety, and the overall guest experience.
- Reinforcing Our Historic Halls: Both Franklin Hall and Winwood Hall underwent essential, staged floor repairs and architrave restorations. These works strengthen the structural integrity of our main gathering spaces, ensuring they remain safe and functional for group activities and camp traditions.
- Improving Site Drainage: Winter weather can bring heavy coastal rainfall, so we installed critical new drainage improvements and bitumen works near PG1 and the Murray Dormitory. This ensures effective water management and protects our grounds from pooling and flooding.
